We are practicing multiplication of 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers (Gr.4) and 2-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers (Gr.5). I know we grownups were taught a specific procedure for completing these multiplications, but in our class we have been learning a new way: The area model! This method promotes conceptual understanding of multiplication that will be useful moving forward into more complicated questions, like multiplication of fractions or negative numbers, where the traditional method fails.
If you are helping your child with their math homework, please help them by using the area model to solve multiplication problems, as this will better support their math learning moving forward.
