Bonjour tout le monde! Just a couple of quick reminders today! First, the new spelling unit went home and is due Tuesday as usual!
We also have a bit of math homework due Monday for those who did not finish in class!
We also did an awesome workshop about Haikus today. Ask your child to show you what they wrote! (It should be in their backpack.)
Merci tout le monde! Enjoy the beautiful sunshine! It's so nice to see everyone back for our first full week after the break! We hope you had a wonderful, restful spring break! We just have a couple of updates for you, as we are getting back into the swing of the year! The new dictee has gone home, and is due next Tuesday as usual!
Also, I've informed the students that the VOS stage production of Mary Poppins is offering an evening performance (7:30pm) for students at a slightly reduced price ($25 per student) on Thursday May 2nd at the Macpherson Theatre. Doncaster is organizing a group of Grade 4/5 students who would like to attend. Anyone interested took a permission form home today, but I have included one below for you as well, just in case. If your child would like to attend, please return the permission form ASAP to reserve a spot! It should be fun!
Bonjour tout le monde! Wow! It's difficult to believe that after this week, there is only one week of school left before Spring Break! There is NO new dictee this week. We will pick up again after the break! We do have some division homework from math today for those who didn't finish in class, or who have corrections. We have been learning the partial quotient method, or what some people call "The Big 7" because it looks a bit like a big 7 when it's drawn out! I will post a copy of the sheet that may be coming home (due Monday), as well as this handy video that explains more or less how this "Big 7" method of division works. We are drawing circles (instead of stick people) to represent groups, but the concept is the same! If you are helping your child with their division homework, please know that we are not using the traditional long division algorithm. You can quickly familiarize yourself with the "Big 7" method to help at home, using the language we are using in class! Merci beaucoup!
And finally, a reminder that we have some field trips happening next week! Keep an eye on your email for reminders!
Tues - Maritime Museum! Fri - Swimming! It should be a fun way to end our term! Finally, report cards will be going home next Friday! Note that report cards are now accessed online, rather than going home on paper, so watch your email for instructions if needed! Merci! Hey everyone! Hope you all had an enjoyable Leap Day! Apologies for the late update. Our new Spelling sheet has gone home and is due Tuesday as usual!
Our sciences humaines presentation on an explorer is due Monday, so some work at home might be a good idea if there is lots to finish up!
General reminder to everyone to please return permission forms (Camp Thunderbird, Maritime Museum), and don't forget to check SchoolCashOnline for any outstanding payments! Merci! Happy March! Bonjour les familles! We have LOTS going on this week! First, the new dictée has gone home and is due next Tuesday as usual!
Next up, a notice has gone home to Grade 5s regarding our end-of-year trip to Camp Thunderbird! No payment is due at this time, but please return the form ASAP so that we can confirm who is coming and finalize our reservation!
On Thursday this week, we have our trip to the Symphony AND the PISE wheelchair program in the gym, so it will be an active day! Please come prepared with proper footwear for walking to UVic!
And a reminder that Wednesday Feb. 28th is Pink Shirt Day! Hope you had a wonderful long weekend everyone! Hope you're all having a wonderful day! Thanks SO MUCH to all the parents who drove us to skating today! We had a blast! Just a quick reminder that the new spelling sheet went home yesterday, and is due next Tuesday as usual!
Thanks to everyone who sent in cards and treats for our Valentines celebration! It is so appreciated!
Have a wonderful long weekend! Merci! Bonjour tout le monde! We have a notice going home today about our next field trip! We're going to the Maritime Museum to learn about the early exploration of Canada by sea!
The new dictée has gone home and is due next Tuesday as usual!
There is also some math homework due Monday for those who didn't finish in class!
We are practicing multiplication of 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers (Gr.4) and 2-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers (Gr.5). I know we grownups were taught a specific procedure for completing these multiplications, but in our class we have been learning a new way: The area model! This method promotes conceptual understanding of multiplication that will be useful moving forward into more complicated questions, like multiplication of fractions or negative numbers, where the traditional method fails. If you are helping your child with their math homework, please help them by using the area model to solve multiplication problems, as this will better support their math learning moving forward. Here are some examples of how the area model works. The first video is 2-digit times 1-digit (for Gr.4) and the second is 2-digit by 2-digit (for Gr.5) Please let me know if you have any questions!
Merci! Bonjour les amis! This week, we have begun learning how to multiply by tens, hundreds, and thousands. Our work is becoming more challenging! I strongly recommend practicing times tables at home, to increase speed and fluency, in order to support the more challenging work we'll be doing soon with multi-digit multiplication and division! We have a bit of math homework, due Wednesday!
And while I have you, here's the new spelling unit that's going home tomorrow! (Due next Tuesday)
A reminder that our second (and last) skating trip is coming up on Feb. 14! We are still looking for volunteer drivers! Please let us know if you can help!
Merci! Bonjour! The new dictée has gone home yesterday and is due next Tuesday as usual!
Please return your permission form for the symphony ASAP! Here is a PDF if you did not receive one at school or need a new copy!
Reminder that there is no school Friday! It's a Pro-D!
Have a great weekend! |
